Workplace Pride’s “I can be myself @ work’ campaign
Workplace Pride has a unique new campaign called “I can be myself@work’. The campaign reaches out to workers across the country to take part in a show of support for being diverse in the workplace.
The campaign’s mail goal is to raise awareness among Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and Transgenders and their employers that their diversity is a benefit to their workplace and to society! Diverse organizations are successful organizations and this campaign will help to demonstrate that. Main elements include:
- Photo competition with great prizes including a night at the Hotel Pulitzer Amsterdam
- Amsterdam Gay Pride with the Workplace Pride “I can be myself@work” boat and onshore program
- Exposition of winning contest photos on 11 October (National Coming Out Day)
- Presentation of the “I can be myself@work” movie (11 November)

Workplace Pride’s first Connecting Networks Event of 2013 was held yesterday at Arcadis Netherland’s office in Amersfoort. With the theme:
“Your network and branches aborad: why and how to internationalize your network activities”
the gathering looked at all angles of how Workplace Pride members interact with their own branches or activities abroad and how LGBT policies and practices factor into this. Questions discussed included:
- Is it the responsibility of employers with global LGBT policies to implement these policies in countries where local cultures are not LGBT friendly?
- Should employers play a role in influencing local LGBT laws where they do business?
- Should employers be active at all where homosexuality is punishable by imprisonment or death?
- What role should Workplace Pride play in connecting LGBT activities of our members in other countries?
The discussions were very animated and all participants were involved. This was partly due to a dynamic new approach to the event whereby all participants have to take a position on a question and be ready to defend it or at least explain why they feel the way they do (see grid below). A panel of experts (representing Philips, ING and TNT) set the tone of the debate by outlining their own organizations’ experience with LGBT activities in other countries.

Workplace Pride Co-Chair, Marion Mulder, has been nominated for the 2013 LesbICOONingin or “Lesbian Icon” award by the Foundation OndersteBoven. This award, is given anually to those women that have made a significant contribution to the visiblity of Lesbians in society.
Marion, who is a founding Board Member of Workplace Pride Foundation and Co-Chair since January 2012, has been working on LGBT workplace issues for almost a decade. As one of the founders of ING’s LGBT employee network, GALA, Marion set the tone very early for full inclusion of lesbians in the workplace. She has been an inspiration to thousands of women through her corageous work and her forward-looking example of being inclusive, positive and productive with LGBT workplace emancipation.
Marion is also one of the originators and principle organizers of the “L-Women at Work” conference series. These very successful events focus on how lesbians can and do play very visible roles in the working world and how, through their own willpower, knowledge and perserverance, they are able to make significant progress against seemingly impossible odds.

Sinds januari 2012 is Marion duo-voorzitter van Workplace Pride, een stichting die zich richt op LGBT binnen het bedrijfsleven. Marion was een van de oprichters van Workplace Pride en is sinds het begin actief in het bestuur.
Binnen deze stichting focust Marion zich.a. of het borgen van diversiteit en het actief betrekken van vrouwen bij activiteiten van Workplace Pride. Een van deze zichtbare activiteiten is de “L-Women at Work” conferentie.
Zo’n 10 jaar geleden (2003) kwam Marion voor het eerst in aanraking met het concept “LGBT-medewerkersnetwerken” toen zij, geïnspireerd door internationale collega’s, werd gevraagd om samen “Gala” – het LGBT netwerk van ING – op te richten. Toen waren LGBT-netwerken bij bedrijven nog niet echt gebruikelijk. “Inmiddels zijn er 30 grote werkgevers aangesloten bij Workplace Pride, hebben al deze organisaties LGBT-netwerken en zijn we ook aan het kijken hoe we andere typen werkvloeren zoals bijv MKB en ZZPers beter kunnen bereiken.”
Daarnaast is Marion sinds vorig jaar bestuurslid van egma, een stichting die op Europees nivo 10 netwerken van LGBT-professionals verbindt.
