Keynote Addresses on Video at Workplace Pride Conference 2014

Workplace Pride’s 8th annual international conference took an in-depth look at what employers and employees, continue to face when trying to create LGBT-friendly work places in non-LGBT friendly environments. The primary focus for the 2014 conference was on how internationally-operating organizations and communities can work together to create change in the workplace around the world. But we will also zoomed in to local themes and best practices that can be applied to all workplaces, no matter where they are located. With this in mind, the theme of the 2014 conference was:
“Broadening Horizons for LGBT People in the Workplace: International Challenges and Opportunities”
Highlights of the event held at Shell’s global head office in the Hague, included:
- Keynote address by Lord Browne, former BP CEO who related his own personal account of what it was like to separate his LGBT- life from his working self for over 40 years. Lord Browne detailed events and stories that can be found in his new book, “The Glass Closet”, a copy of which was given to all conference participants. - Keynote address by Brigadier General Tammy Smith, the first flag officer of the USA military to publicly admit to being LGBT. In a touching account of working under the policy known as ‘Don’t ask, don’t tell’, General Smith related her own struggle to combine her passion for serving her country with her commitment to be true to herself and her partner. - Keynote address by Minister Frans Timmermans, Dutch minister of Foreign Affairs who gave an impassioned speech about the inclusion of LGBT people in society and at work. In expressing his support for LGBT people and the work that Workplace Pride is doing, Minister Timmerman’s surprised the audience with the announcement that his own ministry would join Workplace Pride as its 38 member. - Keynote address from Hugh Mitchell, Chief Human Resources and Corporate Officer, Shell, Hugh is a member of the Board for the Centre for Advanced Human Resources at Cornell University in the USA, and a Foundation Board member of IMD business school in Lausanne, Switzerland. He was appointed a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources in the USA in 2009. He is also an Honorary Vice-President of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (UK).He gave the closing keynote address at the conference.
