IKEA Joins Workplace Pride
October 21, 2015
IKEA Group has become the newest member of the growing Workplace Pride Foundation family. IKEA is the world’s largest furniture retailer, with stores, industry and trading in 42 countries.
IKEA has long been seen as an LGBT-friendly organization by many people in the LGBT community. For decades, the company has been LGBT-inclusive in its ads and as an employer throughout western Europe and in many other regions of the world. The IKEA Group is working to ensure consistent inclusion practices in its units worldwide. Nonetheless, IKEA, like many Workplace Pride members, also operates in countries where being openly LGBT is not that easy. This has proved to be a challenge that demands a new look at their interaction with the global LGBT community.
“Workplace Pride looks forward to working with the IKEA group and its other members to continually address the challenges that globally-active employers face when trying to implement LGBT-inclusive policies and practices in difficult areas around the world” said David Pollard, Executive Director of Workplace Pride. “We welcome those organizations, such as IKEA, that are pro-active with creating more LGBT-inclusive organizations, as they are sending a clear message to all stakeholders about the way forward.”
IKEA is facing this challenge head-on with a thorough effort to find out how best to engage with the LGBT community: “We want all IKEA employees to be able to be themselves at work and all of our clients and partners to know that we respect and support the LGBT community” said Sari Brody, Global Diversity and Inclusion Manager. “Working with Workplace Pride and other LGBT-focused organizations around the world is a major step in this journey to which we are firmly committed”.
