TU Delft celebrating National Coming Out Day

Post Date: October 13, 2018

On October 11th, TU Delft hosted a National Coming Out Day event with several keynote speakers and a panel discussion on the various aspects of Diversity and Inclusion (D&I).

Keynote speakers author Micha Meinderts, TU Delft student Judith Meijer, and TU Delft assistant professor Roberto Rocco talked about transitioning at the workplace, how the individual can support people who are transitioning, and about identity and ‘trans-sectionality’.

Workplace Pride Relationship Manager Skylar Leslie led the panel discussion on D&I topics such as the differences and overlaps of D&I and how LGBTI inclusion has changed over the last 20 years. In addition, the panel discussed tangible resources for increasing inclusion and how university policy may be able to aid in increasing diversity, as well as the purpose of gender-neutral toilets.

An animated dialogue followed about, among others, how the works council can help with diversity regulations and admissions procedures, how individuals can consider their own biases when discussing D&I issues in classrooms and how gender-neutral toilets are not an exclusive LGBTI issue, which initiated a reflexive conversation on how people tend to act based on conditioning but not inherent beliefs.

The event ended with a network drink where conversations continued and new connections were made.

Thanks again to TU Delft and to everyone who helped make this great Coming Out Day celebration happen!
