Workplace Pride’s Tech@Workplace Pride community recently gathered at Saxion University of Applied Sciences for an in-depth working session on bridging the gap in LGBTIQ+ inclusion between operational and office staff. The visit built on several years of collaboration, bringing together organizations including ASML, Avery Dennison, Eaton, FrieslandCampina, Saxion University and Tata Steel, to share experiences and co create practical solutions.
At Saxion, we saw how technological and social innovation reinforce each other through introductions to the SMART Mechatronics & Robotics and TPAC research groups. This behind the scenes view highlighted why operational environments require a different approach than office environments. The Saxion team demonstrated how they bridge the gap between academic research and practical, industry ready solutions.
The workshop at Saxion
During our visit, we continued refining our three tier training model, designed to help organisations to embed inclusion at all levels: strategic leadership, middle management, and operational staff. Together, we explored how to translate inclusive leadership traits into everyday behavior, how operational workers experience psychological safety, and how to apply concrete tools, from bias interrupters to visual communication and site champion networks, to make inclusion visible and accessible.
What We Learned
- Leadership at every level must act actively.
- Operational staff need tailored communication and support.
- Local ambassadors make or break success.
- Inclusion is strongest when connected to safety, wellbeing, and community.

What’s Next
In the coming period, we will continue to refine the three‑level learning modules, expand our toolbox, and update our materials based on member input. We will reconvene in May, at FrieslandCampina, to continue the conversation and share cross-company learnings. This work will culminate in a set of learning modules that support organisations in creating inclusive environments for everyone, from strategy to shopfloor.
