Trans re-integration in the workplace Webinar Recap

28 OCTOBER 2020

In our latest webinar in the Keeping Members Connected series, Workplace Pride hosted Petra van Dijk from Transwerkt Nederland along with Remke Verdegem of TNN (Transgender Network Nederland. We also had a guest dial in all the way from Argentina, Maryanne Lettieri of Contrata Trans.

Firstly, Petra introduced Transwerkt Nederland and explained what and how her organisation assists trans people with, at numerous stages of their working lives and careers. Unilever for example in the Netherlands is uniquely pioneering forward by having a gender transition policy. Such essential policies are something Petra is very passionate about going forward.

Remke talked about her work with TNN explaining some of the statistics around trans people in the Netherlands and how the binary generation is being succeeded by the “gender fluid” generation.

Since both Transwerkt Nederland and TNN are based in the Netherlands, Maryanne from Contrata Trans brought an international focus on the issues of trans people in Argentina. Maryanne talked about socio-economic plight of trans people and how they are marginalised and are often forced through adversity into the sex industry there.

As always, we had a live international audience who contributed great questions to our fascinating panel!

The Workplace Pride Global Benchmark was first released in 2014 as an annually recurring survey that allows participants to track their progress. It has been developed under the leadership of Workplace Pride and with the support of the University of Leiden and major employers and NGOs from several different countries.

The Benchmark represents the ideal of LGBTI workplace inclusion around the world and is designed to provide management the data to measure, and thereby improve, LGBT workplace inclusion in their organisations, wherever they are. Each participating organisation receives a detailed overview of their progress broken down into the following 8 categories: Policy and Communication, Employee Networks, Workplace Awareness, Support & Benefits, Inclusion and Engagement, Expertise & Monitoring, Business and Supplier Engagement, Impact on Society

Online Symposium Recap | Unilever Signs Declaration

1 June 2020

Friday, June 19th was the big day! After re-designing our entire 2020 program due to the global pandemic, overcoming extreme technological challenges, and shifting mid-stream to embrace the growing conversation surrounding the Black Life Matters movement, our 2020 Online Symposium finally hit the airwaves.

With over 400 registrations from 40 different countries, the Online Symposium provided an innovative forum to explore its theme of “Great Expectations: Envisioning a new decade of LGBTI workplace inclusion”.

The Symposium kicked off with a heartfelt interview with Claudia Brind-Woody from IBM who shared her own experience as an open lesbian in Academia and the business world. While she faced many challenges in her career, Claudia pointed out that she also seized and created many opportunities simply by being herself. She left us with the meaningful quote from the poet and writer Maya Angelou who said: “ My wish for you is that you continue. Continue to be who you are, to astonish a mean world with your acts of kindness.”

The future of LGBTI workplace inclusion, and indeed social and economic interactions on many levels was covered in four interactive breakout sessions dealing with:

  • The economic impact of LGBTI inclusive cities (Open for Business)
  • A deep dive into Workplace Pride’s toolkit for the UN’s LGBTI Standards of Business Conduct (Graham Sparks, Dow & Shell)
  • The situation of the LGBTI community in Europe (ILGA Europe)
  • Attracting young talent in the future (Young@WorkplacePride)

Perhaps the highlight of the Symposium though was the signing of the Declaration of Amsterdam by Unilever. In a recorded message, Allan Jope, CEO of Unilever, outlined how important it was for his company to support LGBTI inclusion in all of their activities around the world. While it will be an ongoing challenge, his signing of the declaration was a very powerful step in the right direction. Workplace Pride salutes this effort in support of the LGBT community around the world, and encourages other organisations to do the same.

Allan’s recording was followed by an interview with two of his colleagues, Anne Schreuders and Frank Galestien, who explored in more detail how they envisioned LGBT inclusion at Unilever in the coming year, and how the company will progress towards its goal of being the most diverse and inclusive company in the world! To view PRESS RELEASE .

“I am a new me” Webinar

10 June 2020

For the eighth episode in our “Keeping Member Connected” live webinar series, the theme was Transgender issues and how they affect people in the workplace and life in general.

To speak about the challenges and struggles of being Transgender is something many people are probably uncomfortable with.

However, Sophie from ING and Max from Aegon spoke in candid detail about their life experiences and interactions at work both in the past and present. They also addressed how COVID-19 is affecting health care in the Netherlands and the knock-on effects within the Transgender community currently.

With a live online audience from twenty-two countries, we heard very honestly human stories and heard Sophie and Max express frankly what their colleagues at work could do a little better and in fact, that these issues reach across to allies and even other sections of the LGBTI community.

Workplace Pride Launches UN LGBTI Standards Toolkit

14 May 2020

Workplace Pride Foundation is pleased to announce the publication of our Toolkit for the United Nations Standards of LGBTI Business Conduct. This toolkit is designed as a one-stop-shop to help organisations implement the general principles outlined in the Standards of Conduct. It takes practical examples gathered from Workplace Pride member organisations, good practices from our Global Benchmark, as well as data from extensive interviews with practitioners to create a comprehensive guide to achieving greater LGBTI inclusion in the workplace

The toolkit was developed in conjunction with Workplace Pride’s Advisory Board member, Graham Sparks and was launched in episode five of the Foundation’s “Keeping Members Connected” webinar series. In the webinar, Graham sets the context and guides us through, in a step by step approach, how to use it, why the toolkit is practical for organisations, and how it can be leveraged by all types of employers. Most importantly, he demonstrates that this toolkit can also be used by LGBTI civil society organisations to interact with businesses and better understand how they can work collaboratively.

While primarily designed for Workplace Pride members, who have access to a greater degree of toolkit material, the basic toolkit is publicly available and contains a wealth of information for all parties.

Keeping Members Connected (Young@WorkplacePride)

December 14 @ 5:06 AM

Our generation fought for basic rights; your generation expects them hosted by Young@WorkplacePride

What is the next step for LGBTI inclusion in the workplace: a conversation between experience groups hosted by Young@WorkplacePride

In the third event of our “Keeping Members Connected” series, Young@WorkplacePride invites you to share your thoughts about what the future of LGBTI+ inclusion looks like in the workplace:

  • What do we expect from our workplaces?
  • Is the use of policies and symbolism enough?
  • Do we rely more on the use of stories and role models of that LGBTI executive that made it to the board of the company? Or both?
  • Is that enough to guarantee inclusion or do we need to go a few layers deeper? And if so, what is it then to make us all feel included?

Objectives:

In a recent conversation, someone who has around 20 years of experience, accurately mused to one of our Young@Workplace Pride Board members, “Our generation fought for basic rights; your generation expects them.”

So the question is: What do we expect from our workplaces? Is it the use of policies and symbolism, such as the Dutch Railways changing their address to people from “Dear Ladies/Gentlemen” to “Dear Travelers”? Or do we rely more on the use of stories and role models of that LGBTI executive that made it to the board of the company? Or both? Is that enough to guarantee inclusion or do we need to go a few layers deeper? And if so, what is it then to make us all feel included?

We’ll begin with an introduction that dives a bit more into the development of this topic and purpose of this workshop to contextualize and trigger the interest for all. Attendees will break out into groups with 0-5 and 5+ working experience, led by our teams. Within the session, we aim to put a short break for them to reflect and provide their views. Afterward, we would then like to discuss those and make a comparison between the experience groups.

Female Leadership in Times of Crisis

Hosted by Women@WorkplacePride

Speaker: Margot Slattery, Global Diversity and Inclusion Officer at Sodexo

We are pleased to invite you to the 6th live webinar in our “Keeping Members Connected” series:  Female Leadership in Times of Crisis hosted by Women@WorkplacePride.

Women are society’s primary caregivers in healthcare and play indispensable roles in education and the hospitality business. This fact has become even more evident in the current COVID-19 pandemic.  At this crucial juncture in our history, LGBTI Women have the power and should seize the opportunity to claim a strategic position in society.

But how are female leaders doing that right now? What are the ideas to maintain visibility in the future and how can we continue to include all LGBTI women in this process? This webinar explores how LGBTI women can have their voices heard about the future of work, their place in the community, and their place in politics as we all adjust to the new post-pandemic reality.

There is Always a Rainbow in the Cloud hosted by Tech@WorkplacePride

We are pleased to invite you to the 7th live webinar in our “Keeping Members Connected” series: There is always a Rainbow in the cloud  hosted by Tech@WorkplacePride

In a resilient democracy, laws exist to prevent governments from collecting data against specific groups of people.

Given the recent pandemic of COVID-19, however, more and more governments around the world are using such data in order to reduce the impact of its spread, at the cost of people’s privacy. How should resilient democracies such as ours respond, and ensure that such data are not used against the LGBTI community? Which ethical and moral choices do we have to make? Must the importance of privacy balance against the general interest of public health and the economy?

Be sure and tune into this webinar which will cover these and other topical questions in a sample of the Tech@Workplace Pride live event on November 13th in Groningen (see banner below)
